Vampire & Zombie Summary

The article "Vampire Gentlemen and Zombie Beasts" written by Angela Tenga, and Elizabeth Zimmerman, starts off by addressing how both vampires and zombies engage the audience differently. Both of these "monsters" are undead yet they draw two different crowds. Zombies incite more fear of death due to their decomposing corpses, which are less appealing to most. On the other hand vampire's bodies keep intact more of their muscular frame, and social and political stability. Next the authors go into consciousness of the two beasts. Since the beginning of zombie movies and shows they have been made out to be a mindless body striving for only living flesh. Vampires are not only given a consciousness, but they have individualism while make collective thoughts and decisions. Vampires promote the lavish lifestyle the consumers are striving to obtain; this was directly compared to a Western capitalistic society. Zombies represent poor creatures that don't really strive for any type of fulfillment other than that of feasting on humans. The article ends stating horror movies and shows are trends that change throughout time, and it’s only a matter of time for a different type of monster to step up and steal the spotlight.
