Summary
In
the article Vampire Gentlemen and Zombie Beasts, the authors (Angela Tenga and
Elizabeth Zimmerman) discussed the differences between Zombies and Vampires.
Zombies have been exposed as the dark side of consumer culture meanwhile the
vampire are the fragility of human identity in advanced society. Vampires have
changed dramatically from the past and the present. In the past, Dracula and
vampires inflicted fear into humanity by threatening the existence of humanity.
In the present, the new vampires obey human laws, respects Western society’s
norms, and share its values. The vampires have had a cultural change in our
society. Vampires are seen more as lonely immortals who seek love, family and
approval of society. It is seen as if vampires have developed a conscience. The
zombie become the new monster and source of horror as the vampires have become
more civilized. As far as their physical features. Vampires are more seen as
upholders of human social codes, their muscular form have connected them into
social and political stability. Meanwhile, Zombie threaten stability and security
not only through their menace to life but through their bodies. Present time Vampires
express youth, beauty, vitality and immortality as well. This is represented by
the Twilight series. While Zombies are shown as human with physical infirmity. The
bodies are shown decomposed and mutilated. This is represented by The Walking
Dead TV series. Zombies might be the present day monsters but you also have to
remember that vampires have a powerful past and they have been preserved in
culture for decades and centuries maybe even millennia. Present day monsters have
changed due to when a child learns that he ‘monster’ he fears is just as scared
of him as he is of it taught children to see how monstrous they are.
