Jonathan Swift Reading Response
In the article, "A Modest Proposal", Jonathan Swift is trying to persuade the readers to join him in his plan to reduce the overpopulation in London. His main idea is to eat children, specifically new borns or very young babies. Swift gives his points on why it would be beneficial not only to reduce overpopulation, but to create more income. Some of his main points of efficiency would be that it would bring in more food, provide breeders with more money, and of course lower the population. As a whole, this article was very disturbing, but definitely could be taken as a parallel to other subjects. When reading this article, I related Swift's idea of eating babies to the production of livestock, such as pigs, cows, and chickens. Most civilized humans would say this article/idea was disgusting and in no way a humane or morally correct thing to do. I imagine a vegan or vegetarian could say that they had similar feelings about eating meat.
