A Modest Proposal- Anmol Sethi

A Modest Proposal Summary

In A Modest Proposal, Jonathan Swift uses satire to convey his idea. He begins by explaining how the Irish have become poor. They spend way to much time looking for food for their families and children. He suggests that society uses the children in order to dig themselves out of poverty. He wants to set aside 100,000 children to be raised for food for the wealthy. He gives the reader many ideas on how to cook the children and how one can calculate how much the child should weigh in order to serve the most amount of guests. The children are considered delicacies so naturally they will be expensive. His hope is that the wealthy people of Ireland will buy the children and the poor will be able to profit from this. He hopes that this will also cause Ireland to become a tourist attraction. The only negative implication of this proposal is that the population of Ireland will go down. He also believes that the general public will be much happier if they are richer and have fewer children.
I find the whole concept interesting. I like how the author uses satire in order to show how ridiculous this plan is. He has taken the issue of overpopulation and made the topic light and funny. I think satire is a great way to not only convey a message but also keep the reader entertained and wanting more.
